DESCRIPTION:
EPW - John Morris, Liverpool, improved patent detached lever fusee, 54mm, heavy and possibly American 18K yellow gold OF original pair cases bearing "18" eagle hallmarks, casemaker "HT&Co" (unknown), KWKS, dark cream-color ED, lever escapement, 7J, DES, gilt mvt, s#3516. Gross weight of assembled watch 91.4 dwt (142.2 g). The case is too early to be by H Tissot & Co of New York (ca 1887), but is definitely by a fully schooled English maker, who may have relocated to the United States. Alternatively, being intended for export market, the watch may have been marked without recourse to guild rules or assay, and the one Liverpool-based maker could have been Henry Tarleton, the only casemaker with those initials in either the Birmingham or Chester records.
CONDITION:
Mvt: GRO, near mint gilding, no oxide on steel components; dial perfect; hands near mint; original outer case shows little wear, some MFS and FS, no dents or dings; button latch good; original inner case shows less wear, many MFS, no dents or dings; bow & pendant original; good flat-domed glass crystal.
